As the nearby town of Musile di Piave, placed on the opposite bank of the River, also San Donà di Piave underwent, with the passing of centuries some disastrous River floods and went through bombing both before and during World War I and II.
Many finds of the very old past have been irremediably lost.
Nevertheless, there are still, in this town, of wide squares and numerous parks, beautiful villas, of great worth, an example of the best architecture of the century which is just passed.

A visit in San Donà di Piave cannot but start from the Parco Fluviale (River Park), coming from Musile, as soon as one takes the bridge, known as Ponte della Vittoria (the Victory Bridge), crossing the Piave River.
The bridge can be easily seen, on the right side along the River bank.

Just a few hundred meters further down, one can reach the beautiful Piazza Indipendenza (Independence Square), where The Town Hall, The Cultural Centre and the Public library are located.

Three corners of the square have got high arcades and more or less in the centre of the square is placed the monument to Giannino Ancillotto (1986-1924) airman, hero of World War I. Independence Square, due to its central position and to its broadness, lodges numerous events of the town, whereas other entertainment initiatives take place in the pedestrian area along Corso Silvio Trentin and in the above mentioned River Park.

Not far from the Square is the Dome dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie (the Holy Mary).
The building, built in 1842 and restored after World War I, has got a beautiful neoclassical façade, with Corinthian Columns. Near the Dome, a beautiful Bell Tower, symbol of Sandonatesi, so are called the inhabitants of this town.

A pause in the friendly pedestrian zone of the centre and afterwards, a visit to the Land Reclamation Museum opened in 1983, a very important site to be visited in order to better understand the history of the whole "Basso Piave" region.

Divided into very well organized sections, which also count an ethnographic and a naturalistic section of particular interest, this Museum takes its name from the impressive works of Land Reclamation of the whole Basso Piave area, which characterized a great part of late 19th century and of 20th century.

In the Museum can be seen numerous Roman finds of the territory. San Donà was in fact crossed by the ancient Roman Road Via Annia. Moreover, there are remains dating back to 6th century b.C.

San Donà is also a lively cultural centre. This is testified, among other expressions by the Sculpture and Architecture Park; in the park, which is surely worth while visiting, in Via Vittorio Veneto, there can be found prestigious sculptures of great artists, and frequently, in this splendid frame made of nature and art, take place important musical initiatives.

The town is also well equipped with a lively Cultural Centre (L. Da Vinci) and various exhibition centres (in particular the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery, the "Metallic Hall" and the Exhibition Room Agorà), which host a lot of cultural initiatives and exhibitions. At the Metropolitan Theatre "Astra" take place instead lots of prestigious theatre, cultural and music events.
