Only few people know, in Venice, the Church of San Giovanni Elemosinario that has been closed for many years and after a restauration is now open to the public, thanks to the cooperation among Monuments and Fine Arts Office that directed the works, Patriarchate and Chorus-Association of Churches in Venice.
Two beautiful altar-pieces, by Tiziano and Pordenone have returned on their originary place.
The church was rebuilt after the fire of 1571 that destroied all the area and is a precious example of Renaissance Architecture. On the ceiling a fresco by Pordenone was discovered during the restauration works.

The church was built by Antonio Abbondi, called the Scarpagnino, after the disastrous fire of 1514 that destroyed the whole area. The church itself is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture and presents a collection of 15th century Venetian paintings. Among the main works there is the frescoed ceiling of the central dome by Pordenone, who was mentioned in many documents, which was thought to be lost, but was rediscovered during the restauration works and is now visible for the first time.

The church, rebuilt after a fire in the 16th century, has important works of Renaissance art, among them a very fine altarpiece by Titian in the Presbytery - a portrait of the church’s patron saint.
